BIS CERTIFICATION FOR CENTRIFUGALLY CAST IRON PRESSURE PIPES
IS 1536:2001

In this competitive scenario, it isn't easy to survive in the market without a standard quality and certified product. BIS license may also be required to sell products in the Indian market.

To get BIS certification and produce a standard quality product, the manufacturer must ensure that their product must follow the specified Indian standard.
Let's take a closer look at IS 1536:2001 for Centrifugally cast (Spun) iron pressure pipes for water, gas, and sewage.

Centrifugally cast (Spun) iron pressure pipes for water, gas, and sewage are covered under IS1536:2001. The BIS adopted this Indian standard after the metallurgical engineering division council approved the draft finalized by the pig iron and cast iron sectional committee.

This standard specifies the requirements for centrifugally cast (spun) iron pressure pipes for water, gas, and sewage main lines manufactured in metal or sand lined moulds. This standard applies to cast iron pipes with sockets/spigots (lead caulked or push on flexible) or flanges as specified. Apart from what is specified in this standard, this standard also applies to mechanical and push-on joints whose inner profile of the socket end and spigot end of the pipe shall depend on the type of rubber gasket, ensuring that the overall dimensions are maintained for reasons of safety and interchangeability.

The metal used in the manufacture of pipes must be of good quality and meet the mechanical requirements of the standard. It may be manufactured using any method at the manufacturer's discretion, as long as the requirements defined in this standard are met.

Classification

Pipes have been classified in this standard as LA, A and B based on their thickness. Classes C, D, and E may be derived for specific purposes.

REQUIRED TESTS

  • Ring test and Tensile Test
  • Brinell hardness Test
  • Hydrostatic Test

The manufacturer must demonstrate that his products comply with this standard by controlling the manufacturing process and performing the various tests.

Each pipe must be clearly and indelibly marked with the manufacturer's name, nominal diameter, class and mass of pipe, and last two digits of manufacturing year as per specified standard. The Standard Mark (ISI Mark) may also be applied to each pipe. The Manufacturer must obtain a BIS license from the Bureau of Indian Standards to use a standard mark (ISI Mark). The Bureau grants a license based on a successful assessment of manufacturing infrastructure, production process, and quality control and testing capabilities during a visit to its manufacturing premises.
