BIS CERTIFICATION FOR COCONUT FATTY ACIDS

In this competitive scenario, it isn't easy to survive in the market without a standard quality and certified product. BIS license may also be required to sell products in the Indian market.

As per the Coconut Fatty Acids (Quality Control) Order, 2022, the Bureau of Indian Standards has made it mandatory to obtain BIS certification for Coconut Fatty Acids. Coconut Fatty Acids shall conform to IS 12069:1987 and shall bear the Standard Mark (ISI Mark) under a license from the Bureau of Indian Standards as per Scheme-I of Schedule-II of the Bureau of Indian Standards (Conformity Assessment) Regulations 2018.

To obtain a BIS certificate for Coconut Fatty Acids, the manufacturer must ensure that Coconut Fatty Acids conform to applicable Indian standards. IS 12069:1987 is the Indian standard for Coconut Fatty Acids.

This standard specifies the requirements and the sampling and testing method for Coconut Fatty Acids. There will be two grades of material, grade 1 and grade 2. Grade 1 shall be distilled, while Grade 2 shall be undistilled.

The material shall be produced by splitting the oil obtained from copra. Vacuum distillation shall be performed on the Grade 1 material. A minimum flash point is required if a solvent is used to produce oil or fatty acid.

The material shall be free from sediments, contaminants, suspended and other foreign matter, and separated water. The material must also meet the requirements given in the standard.

The following tests shall be carried out as per the method specified in the standard.

  • Test for free mineral acidity
  • Determination of ash

Packing and marking

Packing and marking shall be done as per IS 12069:1987. The material must be packed in suitable containers. The containers must be securely closed and marked with the name and grade of the material, net mass, batch number or lot number, month and year of manufacture, and the manufacturer's name and trade mark. The container may also be marked with the standard mark (ISI Mark).

The manufacturer must obtain a BIS license for Coconut Fatty Acids from the Bureau of Indian Standards to use a standard mark (ISI Mark). BIS will grant a license after successfully assessing manufacturing infrastructure, processes, quality control, and testing capabilities during a visit to manufacturing premises.
