BIS CERTIFICATION FOR COLD ROLLED STEEL SHEETS & COILS
IS 14491:1997

In this competitive scenario, it isn't easy to survive in the market without a standard quality and certified product. BIS license may also be required to sell products in the Indian market.

To get BIS certification and produce a standard quality product, the manufacturer must ensure that their product must follow the specified Indian standard.

Let's take a closer look at IS 14491:1997 for low carbon high strength cold-rolled steel sheets and coils for cold forming.

This standard specifies the requirements for cold rolled steel sheets and coils of higher strength intended for applications requiring more formability than standard cold rolled steel sheets. It covers sheets and coils up to 4 mm thick. If the proper welding conditions are chosen, this product is usually suitable for welding.

The processes used in the manufacturing of steel and cold rolled steel sheets, and coils are left to the discretion of manufacturer. The steel must be of killed quality and have a fine grain structure. Cold rolled steel sheets and coils must have surface condition and finish as specified in the standard. The finished material must be free of laminations, surface flaws, and other flaws that would be detrimental to the finished product or subsequent appropriate processing. IS 8910 specifies the general requirements for the supply of cold rolled steel sheets and coils.

TESTS

Tests shall be carried out in accordance with the method specified.

  • Chemical composition
  • Tensile test
  • Bend test
  • Dimension & tolerance

Packing and marking

Packing and marking shall be done as per IS 14491;1997. Sheets and coils must be packed in waterproof material and wrapped in a steel envelope. Each bundle/coil must have a tag marked with the grade designation, order number, product dimension, cast/coil number, mass, and manufacturer's name or trade mark. The standard mark (ISI Mark) may also be applied to the material. To use a standard mark (ISI mark), the manufacturer is required to obtain a BIS licence from the Bureau of Indian Standards. BIS will grant a licence after successfully assessing manufacturing infrastructure, processes, quality control and testing capabilities during a visit to manufacturing premises.
