IS 4246:2002

In this competitive scenario, it isn't easy to survive in the market without a standard quality and certified product. BIS license may also be required to sell products in the Indian market.

To get BIS certification and produce a standard quality product, the manufacturer must ensure that their product must follow the specified Indian standard.

Let's take a closer look at IS 4246:2002 for domestic gas stove.

Domestic gas stove for use with LPG is covered under IS 4246:2002. This standard covers the construction, operation, safety requirements, and tests for household gas stoves with metallic bodies designed for use with liquefied petroleum gases at a gas inlet pressure of 2942 kN/m2 (30 gf/cm2).

The stove must be designed and constructed in accordance with the standard. The appliance, including all components, must be easy to clean and keep in excellent operating order, with easy access to accessories and controls for maintenance and modification. The burner parts must not become disconnected while the appliance is in use. Burner ports must be built and located in such a way that spilled food does not create internal fouling of the mixing tube or blockage of the injector jet during normal operation. The finished surfaces on the outside must be easily cleanable. There shall be no pressure regulator integrated as part of the stove.

The appliance must be designed in such a way that it is stable and cannot be easily overturned. The pan supports must be designed in such a way that a pan of 100 mm diameter can be supported over at least one top burner without the use of loose rings, and a vessel of 125 mm diameter can be stable over each burner. When tested in accordance with the methods specified, the domestic gas stove must meet the requirements specified in the standard. The manufacturer must ensure that the stove meets the requirements of this standard. A laboratory shall be adequately maintained, in which the various tests shall be carried out according to the methods specified in the standard.

    • Floor, wall, ceiling, and surface temperature
    • Thermal efficiency
  2. Routine Tests
    • Gas soundness
    • Ignition and flame travel
    • Flame stability
    • Noise control
    • Flashback
