BIS CERTIFICATION FOR DOMESTIC PRESSURE COOKERS
IS 2347:2017

In this competitive scenario, it isn't easy to survive in the market without a standard quality and certified product. BIS license may also be required to sell products in the Indian market.

To get BIS certification and produce a standard quality product, the manufacturer must ensure that their product must follow the specified Indian standard.
Let's take a closer look at IS 2347:2017 for domestic pressure cookers.

Domestic pressure cookers are covered under IS 2347:2017, and this standard specifies the requirements for domestic pressure cookers. The nominal capacity of pressure cookers shall range from 1 to 22 liters and shall be expressed only in full or half-liter units.

All components of the cookers that come into contact with food or steam, including the vessel, gasket, pressure regulating device, and internal accessories, must be made of materials that meet the following specifications:

  • They must not discolour the food; spoil the flavour or odour of the cooked food in the cooker.
  • They must not be harmed by contact with foods cooked in the cooker in such a way that the cooker's operational efficiency or safety is impaired.

Domestic Pressure Cookers shall be classified as follows in accordance with IS 2347: 2017 for GoL/CSoL.

Group Nominal Capacity (litres)
Group 1 1 to 6.5
Group 2 7 to 15.5
Group 3 16 to 24

The pressure cookers' body and lid, as well as the containers and grid, must be made of aluminium alloys or stainless steel conforming to standard requirements. In the case of wrought-iron cookers, the chemical composition of the fusible plug must be such that it melts before a gauge pressure greater than three kgf/cm2 is reached. The gasket must comply with IS 7466.

The domestic pressure cooker's construction must be suitable to ensure easy and safe handling, good performance, and reasonable life. The vessel must be built in such a way that no distortion occurs under normal operating conditions. The body and lid must be free of wrinkles, scratches, and other surface flaws.

tests

The following test shall be carried out for domestic pressure cookers.

  • Air Pressure Test
  • Proof Pressure Test
  • Operating Test for Pressure Regulating Device
  • Test for Safety Pressure Relief Device
  • Bursting Pressure Test
  • Tests for Removal of Lid Under Pressure
  • Test for Spring-Loaded Mechanism

Each group's pressure cookers of the same type must be tested to cover the group's entire nominal capacity. Labeling and marking shall be carried out in accordance with IS 2347: 2017. Each cooker must be marked with its capacity on the body and the manufacturer's name or recognized trademark on both the lid and the body. The carton must be similarly marked. The Standard Mark (ISI Mark) may also be stamped on the body of each pressure cooker. The Manufacturer must obtain a BIS license from the Bureau of Indian Standards to use a standard mark (ISI Mark). The Bureau grants a license based on a successful assessment of manufacturing infrastructure, production process, and quality control and testing capabilities during a visit to its manufacturing premises.
