BIS CERTIFICATION FOR DUCTILE IRON FITTINGS
IS 9523: 2000

In this competitive scenario, it isn't easy to survive in the market without a standard quality and certified product. BIS license may also be required to sell products in the Indian market.

To get BIS certification and produce a standard quality product, the manufacturer must ensure that their product must follow the specified Indian standard.

Let’s take a closer look at IS 9523:2000 for ductile iron fitting for pressure pipes.

Ductile Iron Fittings for Pressure Pipes are covered by IS 9523:2000. This standard specifies the requirements for ductile iron fittings used with pressure pipes carrying water, gas, and sewage with nominal diameters ranging from 80 to 2000 mm.

The above size range is divided into the following groups:

Group Sizes (Nominal Diameter)
I Upto and including DN 300
II Over DN 300 upto and including DN 600
III Over DN 600

To cover the entire range, one sample must be drawn and tested from each group of the similar fitting.

This standard applies to fittings for mechanical joints, push-on joints, and flanged joints used for jointing with various types of gaskets. This standard does not cover the design of the socket or the gasket. Fittings made from spun pipes and plain-ended fittings can also be used if necessary.

This standard does not restrict the use and development of other types of joints as long as the overall dimensions are maintained for safety and interchangeability.

The fittings covered by this standard are typically supplied with both external and internal coatings to prevent corrosion. The fittings are designed for fluid temperatures ranging from 0°C to 50°C, excluding frost.

The metal used in the manufacture of castings must conform to the appropriate grade as specified in IS 1865, in accordance with the requirements of this standard.

The castings must be stripped with all necessary precautions to avoid warping or shrinkage defects. The castings must be structurally sound and free of surface or other defects. The fitting must meet the requirements outlined in the standard.

TESTS

Tests shall be done in accordance with the method specified.

  • Tensile test
  • Hardness test
  • Heat treatment
  • Retests
  • Hydrostatic test

Marking:

Marking shall be done as per IS 9523: 2000. Each fitting shall mark with information as specified in the standard. The standard mark (ISI mark) must be applied to each fitting, provided that the material so marked meets all of the specification's requirements. The manufacturer must obtain a BIS license from the Bureau of Indian Standards to use a standard mark (ISI Mark). The BIS issues a license based on a successful evaluation of the manufacturing infrastructure, quality control, testing capabilities, and manufacturing process.
