BIS CERTIFICATION FOR ELECTRIC IMMERSION WATER HEATER
IS 302-2-201:2008

In this competitive scenario, it isn't easy to survive in the market without a standard quality and certified product. BIS license may also be required to sell products in the Indian market.

To get BIS certification and produce a standard quality product, the manufacturer must ensure that their product must follow the specified Indian standard.
Let's take a closer look at IS 302(Part 2/Sec 201):2008 for the electric immersion water heater.

IS 302-2-201:2008 covers an electric immersion water heater. The Bureau of Indian Standards adopted this Indian Standard (Part 2/Sec 201) (First Revision) after the Electrotechnical Division Council approved the draft finalized by the Electrical Appliances Sectional Committee.

This standard covers the safety requirements of portable electric immersion heaters for household use and similar applications with rated voltages of not more than 250 V. This standard applies to appliances that are not intended for normal household use but may still pose a risk to the public, such as those used by laymen in shops, light industry, and on farms.

Immersion heaters are constructed by encasing a resistance heating wire in a ceramic jacket and surrounding it with a sheath. The sheath can be made of copper, stainless steel, cast iron, titanium, or PFA coated.

Required TESTS

The following test shall be carried out for an electric immersion water heater.

  1. Earth Continuity test
  2. Electric strength test
  3. Functional test
  4. Protection against access to live parts
  5. Power input and current
  6. Heating
  7. Leakage current and electric strength at operating temperature
  8. Leakage current and electric strength
  9. Mechanical strength
  10. Internal wiring
  11. Supply connection and external flexible cord
  12. Terminals for external conductors
  13. Provision for earthing
  14. Screws and connections
