BIS CERTIFICATION FOR HARD DRAWN STEEL WIRE

In this competitive scenario, it isn't easy to survive in the market without a standard quality and certified product. BIS license may also be required to sell products in the Indian market.

To get BIS certification and produce a standard quality product, the manufacturer must ensure that their product must follow the specified Indian standard.

Let's take a closer look at IS 2589:1975 for Hard Drawn Steel for Upholstery Springs.

This standard specifies the requirements for patented and non-patented hard drawn steel wire intended for use in upholstery springs. These upholstery springs are used to make bed springs, mattresses, furniture cushions, furniture spring units, automobile seats, and back units.

This wire is not intended for use in the production of mechanical springs. The steel shall be produced using an open hearth, an electric furnace, basic oxygen, or a combination of these processes. Each ingot must have a sufficient discard to ensure that there is no piping, harmful segregation, or other defects.

To achieve the mechanical properties specified in the standard, the wire must be cold drawn. The chemical composition must conform to the standard. The wire size must be as specified in the standard. Finish wire must be free of dangerous flaws. The wire shall be supplied in smooth unoiled phosphate drawn condition unless otherwise specified.

Testing

The following test shall be carried out in accordance with the method specified.

  • Tensile test
  • Wrapping test
  • Torsion test
  • Coiling test
  • Reverse bend test

Packaging and marking:

Packaging and marking shall be done in accordance with IS 2589:1975. Each coil or bundle of wire shall be compactly bound and fastened, with the size, weight, physical condition, trademark or name of manufacturer legibly marked on a metal tag securely attached to each bundle of wire. Standard mark (ISI Mark) may also be applied to the material.

The Manufacturer must obtain a BIS license from the Bureau of Indian Standards to use a standard mark (ISI Mark). The Bureau grants a license based on a successful assessment of manufacturing infrastructure, production process, and quality control and testing capabilities during a visit to its manufacturing premises.

If a product falls under the scope of the BIS Conformity Assessment Scheme, All the manufacturers, importers, and foreign entities must obtain BIS ISI Certification. The Bureau may cancel the License if the product fails to meet certification requirements.
