BIS CERTIFICATION FOR HERMETIC COMPRESSORS
IS 10617:2018

Hermetic compressors are covered in IS 10617:2018. This standard applies to hermetically sealed refrigeration and air-conditioning compressors based on reciprocating, rotary, and scroll pump mechanisms that operate on the vapour compression cycle and are suitable for low, medium, and high-temperature applications.

The capacity of the hermetic compressor must be evaluated under the test conditions specified in the standard. A built-in protection system should be included in the compressor. The compressor must have a built-in protection system. It could be a bimetallic thermal overload protection (OLP) system or an electronic-controlled protection system. The OLPs can be either internal or external to the compressor.

The following parameters shall be considered for grouping of Hermetic Compressors as per IS 10617:2018 for GoL/CSoL:

Category	(i) Low back pressure (LBP)
	(ii) Commercial back pressure (CBP) / Medium back pressure (MBP)
	(iii) High back pressure (HBP)
No. of phase	(i) Single phase
	(ii) Three phase

The compressor tests will be classified into two types:

1. Type Tests
• Refrigeration Capacity Test
• Startability Test
• Locked Rotor Test
• High Voltage Test
• Insulation Resistance Test
• Pneumatic Test of Shell
• Bursting Test
2. Routine tests

The manufacturer's specifications for painting (colour, type, etc.) and packing must be followed. The compressor shall have the information specified in the standard permanently and legibly marked on a nameplate in a location where it is accessible and visible.

IS 10617:2018 specifies labelling and marking requirements. Conforming to the requirements of this standard, the product may be certified under the provisions of the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 2016 and the Rules and Regulations framed thereunder, and the product(s) may be marked with the Standard Mark (ISI Mark). The Manufacturer must obtain a BIS license from the Bureau of Indian Standards to use a standard mark (ISI Mark). The BIS grants a license based on a successful assessment of manufacturing infrastructure, quality control, testing capabilities, and production process.

Conclusion:

If a product falls under the scope of the BIS Conformity Assessment Scheme, All the manufacturers, importers, and foreign entities must obtain BIS ISI Certification. The Bureau may cancel the License if the product fails to meet certification requirements.
