BIS CERTIFICATION FOR HEXANE FOOD GRADE

In this competitive scenario, it isn't easy to survive in the market without a standard quality and certified product. BIS license may also be required to sell products in the Indian market.

To get BIS certification and produce a standard quality product, the manufacturer must ensure that their product must follow the specified Indian standard.
Let's take a closer look at IS 3470: 2017 for hexane, food-grade.

IS 3470: 2017 covers hexane, food grade. BIS adopted this Indian standard after the draft finalized by the petroleum product sectional committee was approved by the petroleum, coal, and related products division council. This standard specifies the requirements and sampling and testing methods for hexane, food grade, to be used as the solvent for oleaginous material extraction.

FG Hexane is a light distillate produced at various refineries from special cut Naphtha, from which the Hexane-rich stream is extracted and purified to meet the required specification.

Food-grade hexane is made from raw hexane feed by reducing the unsaturated content with sulfolane. The material shall be a petroleum distillate fraction containing a high proportion of n hexane. It shall be a clear colourless liquid with a characteristic petroleum-like odour that is free of sediment, suspended matter, and moisture. The material shall also meet the requirements outlined in the standard.

Tests

The following test shall be carried out in accordance with the method prescribed.

  • Density test
  • Refractive index
  • Distillation test
  • Non volatile residue
  • Sulphur content test
  • Aromatics test

Packaging and labelling must be done in accordance with the standards. Each container must bear the warning label 'FLAMMABLE,' as well as the corresponding symbol for labelling dangerous goods. When the material is packed in drums or smaller containers, it must be labelled with the information specified in the standard. The standard mark (ISI Mark) may also be applied to the container. The manufacturer must obtain a BIS license from the Bureau of Indian Standards to use a standard mark (ISI Mark).

Conclusion:

If a product falls under the scope of the BIS Conformity Assessment Scheme, All the manufacturers, importers, and foreign entities must obtain BIS ISI Certification. The Bureau may cancel the License if the product fails to meet certification requirements.
