BIS CERTIFICATION FOR HIGH SPEED TOOL STEELS
IS 7291:1981

In this competitive scenario, it isn't easy to survive in the market without a standard quality and certified product. BIS license may also be required to sell products in the Indian market.

To get BIS certification and produce a standard quality product, the manufacturer must ensure that their product must follow the specified Indian standard.

Let's take a closer look at IS 7291:1981 for high speed tool steels.

This standard covers the requirements for high-speed tool steel in the following forms:

  • Forged shapes
  • Billets
  • Bars - round, square, hexagonal, or octagonal
  • Drill rods - round, square or rectangular
  • Flats
  • Strip in coils
  • Sheets in cut length

The general requirements for material supply shall be as specified in IS 1387-1967. Steel covered by this standard must be ordered and delivered in accordance with the standard. The steel will be produced using an electric process. If any other process is used, the purchaser's prior approval is required.

Each ingot must undergo sufficient reduction and discard to ensure that it is free of piping, segregation, and other harmful defects. The material must be reasonably free of potentially harmful surfaces and internal flaws. However, after machining, any surface defects should be completely removed. At a suitable stage during reduction from the ingot to the finished size, the material may be conditioned to remove injurious surface defects by chipping, machining, grinding, or any other means. If the material is conditioned by grinding or chipping, the depth of conditioning must not be more than half the machining allowance per side, and the width of conditioning must be at least four times the greatest depth.

Tests

Tests shall be carried out in accordance with the standard.

  • Chemical analysis
  • Hardness
  • Macrostructure
  • Grain size
  • Dimensional tolerances

Packing & Marking:

Packing and marking shall be done as per IS 7291:1981. The Standard Mark (ISI Mark) may also be applied to the material. Manufacturers must obtain a BIS license from the Bureau of Indian Standards to use a standard mark (ISI Mark). The Bureau grants a license based on a successful assessment of manufacturing infrastructure, production process, and quality control and testing capabilities during a visit to its manufacturing premises.
