BIS CERTIFICATION FOR HOT ROLLED STEEL STRIP

In this competitive scenario, it isn't easy to survive in the market without a standard quality and certified product. BIS license may also be required to sell products in the Indian market.

To get BIS certification and produce a standard quality product, the manufacturer must ensure that their product must follow the specified Indian standard.

Let’s take a closer look at IS 1029:1970 for Hot rolled steel strip.

This standard specifies the requirements for hot-rolled steel strips of three grades, soft, medium, and hard, with a nominal thickness of less than 3 mm and a width of less than 75mm, commonly referred to as baling hoop.

The strips must be made of steel produced by the open hearth, electric, duplex, basic oxygen, or a combination of these processes. The chemical composition requirements specified in the standard must be met by the materials. The material must be free of harmful defects. Unless otherwise specified, hot rolled steel strips must be supplied in the dimensions agreed upon between the purchaser and the manufacturer.

The following test shall be carried out for a hot rolled steel strip.

  • Chemical composition
  • Tensile test
  • Bend test

Packing and Marking:

Packing and Marking shall be done as per IS 1029:1970. Each length of the strip must be marked with the size and grade of the material. A standard mark (ISI Mark) may also be applied to the product.

Manufacturers must obtain a BIS license from the Bureau of Indian Standards to use a standard mark (ISI Mark). The Bureau grants a license based on a successful assessment of manufacturing infrastructure, production process, and quality control and testing capabilities during a visit to its manufacturing premises.

Conclusion:

If a product falls under the scope of the BIS Conformity Assessment Scheme, All the manufacturers, importers, and foreign entities must obtain BIS ISI Certification. The Bureau may cancel the License if the product fails to meet certification requirements.
