BIS CERTIFICATION FOR HUBLESS CENTRIFUGALLY CAST IRON PIPES
IS 15905:2011

In this competitive scenario, it isn't easy to survive in the market without a standard quality and certified product. BIS license may also be required to sell products in the Indian market.

To get BIS certification and produce a standard quality product, the manufacturer must ensure that their product must follow the specified Indian standard.
Let's take a closer look at IS 15909:2011 for hubless centrifugally cast iron pipes, fittings, and accessories.

Hubless centrifugally cast (spun) iron pipes, fittings, and accessories (spigot series) are covered under IS 15905:2011.

The Bureau of Indian Standards adopted this Indian Standard after the Metallurgical Engineering Division Council approved the draft finalized by the Pig Iron and Cast Iron Sectional Committee.

This standard specifies the requirements for hubless centrifugally cast iron soil, waste, ventilation, and rainwater pipes, as well as the fittings and accessories, including joints.

The pipe and fittings are designed for non-pressure applications, such as gravity drainage. The fittings and accessories covered by this standard are typically made by sand casting. This standard requires cast iron pipes, fittings, and accessories to be hubless (spigot type) and without sockets. This standard specifies the nominal sizes DN of pipes and fittings as 50, 75, 100, 150, and 200 mm. Cast iron used in the manufacturing of pipes, fittings, and accessories must meet the FG 150 grade, as specified in IS 210. Pipes, fittings, and accessories must be stripped with all necessary precautions to avoid warping or shrinking defects.

Tests

The pipe and fittings shall be subjected to the following test:

  1. Crush test on pipe rings
  2. Hammer test
  3. Hydrostatic test

Each pipe, fitting, and accessories must be clearly and indelibly marked with the Manufacturer's name, nominal diameter, last two digits of the manufacturing year, and any other mark required by the purchaser as per specified standard.

The Standard Mark (ISI Mark) may be applied to pipes, fittings, and accessories. The Manufacturer must obtain a BIS license from the Bureau of Indian Standards to use a standard mark (ISI Mark). The Bureau grants a license based on a successful assessment of manufacturing infrastructure, production process, and quality control and testing capabilities during a visit to its manufacturing premises.
