BIS CERTIFICATION FOR INJECTION MOULDED PVC SOCKET FITTINGS

Let's take a closer look at IS 7834 (Parts 1 to 8):1987 for Injection Moulded PVC Socket Fittings with Solvent Cement Joints for Water Supplies.

IS 7834 (Part 1) General requirement: This standard (Part 1) specifies the general requirements for the materials, manufacture, test methods, inspection, and marking of all types of injection moulded PVC socket fittings intended for connection, by using solvent cement, to PVC pipes covered by IS: 4985-1988 for water supply.

IS 7834 (Parts 18): 1987 specifies the requirements for various types of injection moulded PVC socket fittings with solvent cement joints for water supply systems, as detailed below:

  • Part 1 General requirements
  • Part 2 Specific requirements for 45 degrees elbows
  • Part 3 Specific requirements for 90-degree elbows
  • Part 4 Specific requirements for 90-degree tees
  • Part 5 Specific Requirements for 45-degree tees
  • Part 6 Specific requirements for sockets
  • Part 7 Specific requirements for unions
  • Part 8 Specific requirements for caps

Each type of fittings is categorized into the following groups based on size:

The material from which the fitting is made must be primarily composed of polyvinyl chloride, to which only those additives necessary to facilitate the manufacture of sound pipe with a good surface finish, mechanical strength, and opacity may be added.

The fitting shall be subjected to the following test:

  1. Test required
  2. Stress relief test
  3. Opacity test
  4. Effect on water
  5. Short term hydraulic test
  6. Dimension test
  7. Type test
  8. Acceptance test

All fittings must be clearly and indelibly marked at a prominent location with the Manufacturer's identification mark, the size of the fitting, and the appropriate class to which the fitting's pressure rating corresponds. The product must be labelled in accordance with the applicable part. The Firm must declare the types of fittings, pressure classes, and sizes they intend to cover in the License.

The Standard Mark (ISI Mark) may also be applied to each fittings. The Manufacturer must obtain a BIS license from the Bureau of Indian Standards to use a standard mark (ISI Mark). The Bureau grants a license based on a successful assessment of manufacturing infrastructure, production process, and quality control and testing capabilities during a visit to its manufacturing premises.

If a product falls under the scope of the BIS Conformity Assessment Scheme, All the manufacturers, importers, and foreign entities must obtain BIS ISI Certification. The Bureau may cancel the License if the product fails to meet certification requirements.
