BIS CERTIFICATION FOR LINE OPERATED THREE PHASE AC MOTORS
IS 12615:2018

This standard covers the requirements and performance of energy efficient, three phase squirrel cage induction motors in 2, 4, and six poles for frame sizes ranging from 71 to and including 315L, with output ratings specified in IS 1231: 1974.

In every industry, electric motors are the most important type of electric load. Motor-driven systems account for roughly 70% of the energy consumed by the industry. The dimensions of the motors must comply with IS 1231, IS 2223, and IS 2254, as applicable. Motors must meet the requirements as specified in the standard.

For the purpose of the grouping of motor, the following parameters are taken into account:

1. Type of mounting: Foot mounted, Flange mounted, Vertical shaft
2. Number of Poles: 2,4,6,8
3. Efficiency Class : IE2, IE3,IE4
4. Degree of Protection: IP44 or Superior
5. Insulation Class: B, F, or higher
6. Rated Voltage: upto 1000 V
7. Rated Output: 0.12 kW to 1000 kW

At least one sample for each type of pole/insulation must be tested when samples are tested to cover the entire range of motors in accordance with IS 12615:2018.

The Firm must declare which Three Phase Squirrel Cage Energy Efficient Induction Motors it intends to cover under the License.

TESTS

The tests shall be carried out according to the prescribed method.

• Dimensions
• Measurement of resistance of windings of the stator
• Temperature rise test
• Momentary overload test
• Insulation resistance test
• High voltage test
• No-load test
• Reduced voltage running up the test
• High voltage test

Labelling and Marking:

Labeling and marking shall be carried out in accordance with IS 12615: 2018. The marking on the rating plate must conform to the standard, and the standard mark (ISI Mark) may also be applied to the motor. The manufacturer must obtain a BIS license from the Bureau of Indian Standards to use a standard mark (ISI Mark). The BIS issues a license based on a successful evaluation of the manufacturing infrastructure, quality control, testing capabilities, and manufacturing process.

Conclusion:

If a product falls under the scope of the BIS Conformity Assessment Scheme, All the manufacturers, importers, and foreign entities must obtain BIS ISI Certification. The Bureau may cancel the License if the product fails to meet certification requirements.
