BIS Certification for LOW CARBON STEEL WIRE
IS 4882:1979

In this competitive scenario, it isn't easy to survive in the market without a standard quality and certified product. BIS license may also be required to sell products in the Indian market.

To get BIS certification and produce a standard quality product, the manufacturer must ensure that their product must follow the specified Indian standard.

Let's take a closer look at IS 4882:1979 for low carbon steel wire rivets for use in bearing industry.

This standard specifies the specifications for low carbon steel wire rivets used in the bearing industry.

Steel shall be produced using an open hearth, an electric, an acid Bessemer, a duplex, a basic oxygen process, or a combination of these processes. If the manufacturer employs another process, prior approval from the purchaser is required. If the basic oxygen process is used, the nitrogen content must not exceed 0.007 percent.

Steel shall be fully killed. The minimum silicon content in silicon killed steel shall be 0.1 percent. Each ingot must undergo sufficient reduction and discard to ensure that it is free of piping, segregation, and other harmful defects. Ingots, blooms, or billets must be rough machined, chipped, ground, or otherwise prepared to remove any surface imperfections that may cause defects in the finished wire. The finished wire must be well and cleanly drawn to the required size. The wire must be in good condition, with no splits or surface flaws.

A laboratory shall be adequately maintained, in which the various tests shall be carried out according to the methods specified in the standard. When tested, steel must meet the requirements specified in the standard.

Packing and Marking:

The wire must be supplied in coil form. The material must be packed in such a way that corrosion does not attack the material during transit. Each coil must be marked with the nominal size of the wire, the weight of the coil, the date of manufacture, and name or trade mark of the manufacturer. Each coil may be marked with a standard mark (ISI Mark). Manufacturer must obtain a BIS license from the Bureau of Indian Standards to use a standard mark (ISI Mark). BIS grants a license after conforming to all the relevant requirements of applicable Indian standards.
