BIS CERTIFICATION FOR METALLIC COATED STEEL STRIP & SHEET
IS 15961:2012

In this competitive scenario, it isn't easy to survive in the market without a standard quality and certified product. BIS license may also be required to sell products in the Indian market.

To get BIS certification and produce a standard quality product, the manufacturer must ensure that their product must follow the specified Indian standard.

Let's take a closer look at IS 15961: 2012 Hot Dip Aluminium-Zinc Alloy Metallic Coated Steel Strip and Sheet (Plain).

This standard specifies the requirements for continuously hot-dip aluminium-zinc alloy metallic coated steel strip and sheet (plain) thicknesses ranging from 0.25 mm to 1.5 mm. Sheets and coils are made by uniformly coating both surfaces of a cold-rolled steel coil. This standard specifies the following requirements for steel grades, coating classes, and surface finishes:

  1. Normal (N)/Skin-passed (S)
  2. Aluminum/Zinc coating classes
  3. Structural steel-grades

IS 8910 specifies the general requirements for the supply of aluminium-zinc alloy metallic coated steel strip and sheet (plain). IS 513 specifies the base metal for cold-rolled low carbon steel strip for aluminium-zinc alloy metallic coated steel strip and sheet (plain).

The cold-rolled strip is coated by immersing it in a bath of molten aluminium, zinc, and control elements at a temperature suitable for producing a complete and uniformly adhering aluminium-zinc alloy metallic coating. Coated surfaces may be subjected to treatments such as temper mill pass, surface passivation, or other coatings for a variety of reasons. The chemical composition of the base steel must meet IS 513 requirements.

TESTS

The following test shall be carried out in accordance with the method specified.

  • Tensile test
  • Coating test
  • Coating adhesion test
  • Dimension, shape, and tolerances

Marking:

The following information must be legibly and permanently marked on the top of each coil or package of sheets, or shown on a tag attached to each coil or packet:

  1. Manufacturer's name or trade-mark
  2. Material identification/coil number/packet number/batch number, etc
  3. Product dimensions
  4. Number of sheets or mass
  5. Steel grade
  6. Coating class
  7. Date of manufacture

The Standard Mark (ISI Mark) may also be applied to the material. The Manufacturer must obtain a BIS license from the Bureau of Indian Standards to use a standard mark (ISI Mark). The Bureau grants a license based on a successful assessment of manufacturing infrastructure, production process, and quality control and testing capabilities during a visit to its manufacturing premises.
