BIS CERTIFICATION FOR MILD STEEL RIVET BARS

In this competitive scenario, it isn't easy to survive in the market without a standard quality and certified product. BIS license may also be required to sell products in the Indian market.

To get BIS certification and produce a standard quality product, the manufacturer must ensure that their product must follow the specified Indian standard.

Let's take a closer look at IS 3298:1981 for Mild Steel Rivet Bars for Ship Building.

This standard specifies the requirements for mild steel rivet bars with a diameter of 16 mm or greater intended for use in shipbuilding.

Rivet bars must be made of steel that has been produced using an open hearth, electric, duplex, basic oxygen, or a combination of these processes. Steel must be of the semi-killed or killed type. The chemical analysis must be performed in accordance with the specified standard.

The core of rivet bars must be free of harmful concentrations of Sulphur segregates and other non-metallic substances.

Rivet bars must be well and cleanly rolled to the specified dimensions and tolerances. The finished material must be free of surface and internal flaws that would be detrimental to the material's end-use.

TESTS

The following test shall be carried out in accordance with method specified.

  • Tensile test
  • Dump test

Marking:

Marking shall be done as per IS 3298:1981. Rivet bars shall be securely fastened together in bundles, and a metal tag attached to each bundle shall bear the brand of inspecting authority, manufacturer’s name or trade mark, cast number, or identification mark. The material may also be marked with a standard mark (ISI mark).

The Manufacturer must obtain a BIS license from the Bureau of Indian Standards to use a standard mark (ISI Mark). The Bureau grants a license based on a successful assessment of manufacturing infrastructure, production process, and quality control and testing capabilities during a visit to its manufacturing premises.

Conclusion:

If a product falls under the scope of the BIS Conformity Assessment Scheme, All the manufacturers, importers, and foreign entities must obtain BIS ISI Certification. The Bureau may cancel the License if the product fails to meet certification requirements.
