BIS CERTIFICATION FOR MULTIPURPOSE DRY BATTERIES
IS 8144:2018

In this competitive scenario, it isn't easy to survive in the market without a standard quality and certified product. BIS license may also be required to sell products in the Indian market.

To get BIS certification and produce a standard quality product, the manufacturer must ensure that their product must follow the specified Indian standard.
Let's take a closer look at IS 8144:2018 for multipurpose dry batteries.

Multipurpose dry batteries are covered under IS 8144:2018. This standard covers all types of Zinc Carbon batteries in various sizes, including R03, R6, R14, and R20, for various applications.

This standard specifies the tests, dimensions, and requirements for Leclanche type dry batteries of designations R 6 for use in transistor radio receivers, flashlights, and hearing aids, as well as R 14 and R 20 for use in transistor radio receivers, flashlights, and cassette tape recorders.

Multipurpose Dry Batteries are classified into R03, R6, R14, and R20 based on designations and 'Standard (S)' or 'High Power (P)' categories.

The materials and construction must be in accordance with the standard. The performance requirements for batteries R 6, R 14, and R 20 are given in the standard. The cells and batteries must be designated in accordance with standards. The nominal voltages and overall dimensions of batteries R 6, R 14, and R 20 shall conform to those as specified in the standard.

TESTS

The following test shall be carried out for multipurpose dry batteries.

  • Dimensions
  • Terminals
  • Initial life test
  • Delayed life test
  • Leakage test

The product must also meet the requirements of the standard. Labelling and marking shall be done as per the requirements of IS 8144:2018. The Standard Mark (ISI Mark) may also be applied to the product. The manufacturer must obtain a BIS license from the Bureau of Indian Standards to use a standard mark (ISI Mark).
