BIS CERTIFICATION FOR PACKAGED DRINKING WATER

Packaged drinking water is covered under IS 14543: 2016. The Bureau of Indian Standards adopted this Indian Standard (First Revision) after the Food and Agriculture Division Council approved the draft finalized by the Drinks and Carbonated Beverages Sectional Committee. This standard specifies requirements and sampling and testing methods for packaged drinking water (other than natural mineral water).

It shall be filled in sealed containers of various compositions, forms, and capacities suitable for direct consumption without further processing. If remineralization is part of the treatment process, In that case, the ingredients used must be of food-grade quality and meet the requirements of the Prevention of Food Adulteration Act of 1954, and the Rules promulgated there under.

Packaged drinking water shall also comply with the requirements given in the standard. It shall be collected, processed, handled, packaged, and marketed in accordance with the hygienic practices given in the standard.

It must be packed in clean, hygienic, colourless, clear, and tamperproof bottles/containers manufactured of polyethylene (PE) or polyvinyl chloride (PVC) that meet IS 10146 or IS 10151 standards.

The following test shall be carried out for packaged drinking water.

  • Odour test
  • Taste
  • Turbidity test
  • Total dissolved solids test
  • pH test
  • Chemical requirements test

Packaging and marking shall be done in accordance with the standard. The Standard Mark (ISI Mark) must be applied to the product. The Manufacturer must obtain a BIS license from the Bureau of Indian Standards to use a standard mark (ISI Mark). The Bureau grants a license based on a successful assessment of manufacturing infrastructure, production process, and quality control and testing capabilities during a visit to its manufacturing premises.
