BIS CERTIFICATION FOR PALM FATTY ACIDS

In this competitive scenario, it isn't easy to survive in the market without a standard quality and certified product. BIS license may also be required to sell products in the Indian market.

As per the Palm Fatty Acids (Quality Control) Order, 2022, the Bureau of Indian Standards has made it mandatory to obtain BIS certification for Palm Fatty Acids. Palm Fatty Acids shall conform to IS 12067:1987 and bear the Standard Mark (ISI Mark) under a license from the Bureau of Indian Standards as per Scheme-I of Schedule-II of the Bureau of Indian Standards (Conformity Assessment) Regulations 2018.

In order to get a BIS certificate for Palm Fatty Acids, the manufacturer must ensure that Palm Fatty Acids conform to applicable Indian standards.

Let's take a closer look at IS 12067:1987 for Palm Fatty Acids.

This standard specifies the requirements and the sampling and testing method for Palm Fatty Acids.

There will be two grades of material: Grade 1 and Grade 2. Grade 1 will be distilled, while the 2 will be undistilled. The material shall be produced by splitting the oil obtained from the fleshy mesocarp of the oil palm tree's fruit.

If a solvent is used to produce oil or fatty acid, a minimum flash point is required. The material shall be free from sediments, adulterants, suspended and other foreign matter, and separated water. Upon melting, the distilled grade should be clear. The material must also meet the requirements of the standard.

The following tests shall be carried out according to the standard's method.

  • Test for free mineral acidity
  • Determination of ash

Packing and marking

Packing and marking shall be done as per IS 12067:1987. The material must be packed in appropriate containers. The containers must be securely closed and marked with the name and grade of the material, net mass, batch number or lot number, month and year of manufacture, and the manufacturer's name and trade mark. The container may also be marked with a standard mark (ISI Mark).

The manufacturer must obtain a BIS license for Palm Fatty Acids from the Bureau of Indian Standards to use a standard mark (ISI Mark). BIS will grant a licence after successfully assessing manufacturing infrastructure, processes, quality control, and testing capabilities during a visit to manufacturing premises.
