BIS CERTIFICATION FOR PILLAR TAPS
IS 1795:1982

In this competitive scenario, it isn't easy to survive in the market without a standard quality and certified product. BIS license may also be required to sell products in the Indian market.

To get BIS certification and produce a standard quality product, the manufacturer must ensure that their product must follow the specified Indian standard.

Let's take a closer look at IS 1795:1982 for Pillar Taps.

This standard specifies the requirements for material, manufacture and workmanship, construction, finish, and testing of pillar taps. The pillar taps' nominal sizes shall be 15 mm and 20 mm. The nominal bore of the pipe outlet to which the tap is to be fitted shall be used to determine the nominal size of the pillar taps.

The materials used in the manufacture of the various components of pillar taps must meet the requirements specified in the standard. Castings must be structurally sound and free of laps, blow holes, and pitting. External and internal surfaces must be clean, smooth, and sand-free. They must be neatly dressed, with no castings burned, plugged, stopped, or patched. The body, bonnet, spindle, and other parts must be machined true so that when assembled, the parts are axial, parallel, and cylindrical, with smooth finished surfaces.

The area of the water-way throughout the body of the pillar tap must not be less than the area of a circle with a diameter equal to the bore of the pillar tap's seating. The pillar tap's seating must be integral with the body. To avoid cutting the washer, the edges must be rounded. The dimensions of the bonnet and gland must be as specified in the standard. The dimensions of the capstan heads, spindles, washer plate, and washer must be in accordance with the standard.

Testing

Each pillar tap, complete with its component parts, must withstand an internally applied hydraulic pressure of 2 MPa for 2 minutes, during which time it must not leak or sweat.

Marking:

Every pillar tap must be marked with the manufacturer's name or trade mark and the nominal size. The ISI mark may also be applied to the pillar tap. The Manufacturer must obtain a BIS license from the Bureau of Indian Standards to use a standard mark (ISI Mark). The Bureau grants a license based on a successful assessment of manufacturing infrastructure, production process, and quality control and testing capabilities during a visit to its manufacturing premises.
