BIS CERTIFICATION FOR PLAIN COPIER PAPER

In this competitive scenario, it isn't easy to survive in the market without a standard quality and certified product. BIS license may also be required to sell products in the Indian market.

To get BIS certification and produce a standard quality product, the manufacturer must ensure that their product must follow the specified Indian standard.
Let's take a closer look at IS 14490:2018 for Plain copier paper.

Plain copier paper is covered under IS 14490:2018. This standard specifies the requirements, sampling, and testing methods for plain copier paper for use on plain paper copying machines.

The product shall conform to the quality and performance requirements outlined in the standard. The plain copier paper must be free of pinholes. The surface should be well calendered, smooth, and free of fluff and loose fibres. To avoid fluff, surface sizing with starch is preferable. The paper must have good dimensional stability, thermal stability, and no static charge.

Because the operating temperature in the equipment will be around 100°C, moisture content must not be less than 4.0 % and not more than 5.5 % when tested according to IS 1060 (Part 1).

Additional requirement for Eco Mark

The product must meet the quality and performance requirements outlined in the standard. When applying for an Eco Mark, the manufacturer must provide an environmental consent clearance from the relevant state pollution control board to BIS.

Depending on the raw material used in the manufacturing, the material shall be of two types:

Type A: The material must be produced from pulp that contains not less than 60% by mass of pulp made from non-bamboo, non-softwood, and non-recycled materials.

Type B: The material must be manufactured from pulp made entirely from waste paper.

Tests

The following test shall be done.

  • Sizes
  • Brightness
  • Opacity
  • Thickness
  • Smoothness
  • Wax pick

A laboratory shall be adequately maintained, in which the various tests shall be carried out according to the methods specified in the standard.

The package shall be marked with information as specified in the standard. Each ream or reel shall also be marked with the ISI certification mark, and Packaging and marking shall be done as per the requirements of IS 14490:2018. The Manufacturer must obtain a BIS license from the Bureau of Indian Standards to use a standard mark (ISI Mark). The BIS grants a license based on a successful assessment of manufacturing infrastructure, quality control, testing capabilities, and production process.

Conclusion:

If a product falls under the scope of the BIS Conformity Assessment Scheme, All the manufacturers, importers, and foreign entities must obtain BIS ISI Certification. The Bureau may cancel the License if the product fails to meet certification requirements.
