BIS CERTIFICATION FOR PRECIPITATED BARIUM CARBONATE FOR CERAMIC AND GLASS INDUSTRY
IS 12928:1990

In this competitive scenario, it isn't easy to survive in the market without a standard quality and certified product. BIS license may also be required to sell products in the Indian market.

To get BIS certification and produce a standard quality product, the manufacturer must ensure that their product must follow the specified Indian standard.

Let's take a closer look at IS 12928:1990 for Precipitated barium carbonate for Ceramic and Glass Industry.

IS 12928:1990 covers Precipitated barium carbonate for Ceramic and Glass Industry. This standard specifies the requirements and the sampling and testing methods for precipitated barium carbonate for the ceramic and glass industries.

There shall be two material grades:

  1. Grade 1: For use in dielectric ceramics, hard ferrites and electro ceramic materials
  2. Grade 2: For use in ceramic glaze, frits, colours and glasses

The material must be free-flowing and in the form of fine white powder. When tested in accordance with the method prescribed, the material must meet the requirements specified in the standard.

One of the most important raw materials used in the ceramics industry is barium carbonate, which is used to make various types of ceramic dielectric capacitors for high-frequency applications. It is also used as an ingredient in the production of other electro ceramic materials such as resistors, circuit breakers, etc.

TESTS

Tests shall be carried out in accordance with the method prescribed in this standard.

  1. Test for determination of barium
  2. Test for volatile matter
  3. Test for free alkali
  4. Test for sodium oxide
  5. Test of total iron
  6. Estimation of total sulphur

Packing and Marking:

Packing and marking must be done as per IS 12928:1990. The material must be packaged in jute bags lined with polyethylene films or in HDPE bags. The bags must be tightly closed, and the bags must be labelled with the information as specified in the standard.

The Standard Mark (ISI Mark) shall be marked on each bag, provided that the material so marked meets the requirements of the specification. The Manufacturer must obtain a BIS license from the Bureau of Indian Standards to use a standard mark (ISI Mark). The BIS grants a license based on a successful assessment of manufacturing infrastructure, quality control, testing capabilities, and production process.
