BIS CERTIFICATION FOR PVC-U SCREEN & CASING PIPES
IS 12818:2010

In this competitive scenario, it isn't easy to survive in the market without a standard quality and certified product. BIS license may also be required to sell products in the Indian market.

To get BIS certification and produce a standard quality product, the manufacturer must ensure that their product must follow the specified Indian standard.
Let's take a closer look at IS 12818:2010 for PVC-U screen and casing pipes.

Unplasticized polyvinyl chloride (PVC-U) screen and casing pipes for bore/tube wells are covered under IS 12818:2010. BIS adopted this Indian Standard (Second Revision) after the Civil Engineering Division Council approved the draft finalized by the Plastics Piping Systems Sectional Committee.

This standard specifies the requirements for the ribbed screen, plain screen, and plain casing pipes with nominal diameters ranging from 35 mm to 400 mm made of unplasticized polyvinyl chloride for water supply bore/tube wells.

The material from which the pipe is made shall be primarily unplasticized polyvinyl chloride. Only those additives necessary to produce sound and durable pipe with a good surface finish and mechanical strength under use conditions may be added. All pipe dimensions must adhere to the specified standards.

Types of Pipe

Unplasticized PVC screen and casing Pipes are classified as follows:

  1. Ribbed screen pipe
    • Ribbed medium-well screen pipe (RMS)
    • Ribbed deep well screen pipe (RDS)
  2. Plain screen pipe
    • Plain medium-well screen pipe (PMS)
    • Plain deep well screen pipe (PDS)
  3. Casing pipe
    • CS Pipe
    • CM Pipe
    • CD Pipe

Tests

Unplasticized PVC Pipe shall be subjected to the following test:

  1. Visual appearance test
  2. Resistance to external blows
  3. Tensile strength test
  4. Vicat softening temperature test
  5. Effect on water
  6. Acceptance test
  7. Type test

All pipes must be clearly and indelibly marked with the Manufacturer's name, nominal diameter, and type of pipe and slot size, effective length in the specified colour.

The Standard Mark (ISI Mark) may also be applied to each pipe. The Manufacturer must obtain a BIS license from the Bureau of Indian Standards to use a standard mark (ISI Mark). The Bureau grants a license based on a successful assessment of manufacturing infrastructure, production process, and quality control and testing capabilities during a visit to its manufacturing premises.
