BIS CERTIFICATION FOR ROOM HEATERS
IS 302(PART 2/SEC 30)

In this competitive scenario, it isn't easy to survive in the market without a standard quality and certified product. BIS license may also be required to sell products in the Indian market.

To get BIS certification and produce a standard quality product, the manufacturer must ensure that their product must follow the specified Indian standard.
Let's take a closer look at IS 302(Part 2/Sec 30) for room heaters.

Room heaters are covered under IS 302(Part 2/sec 30). This standard addresses the safety requirements for the electric radiator (room heaters). However, this standard does not address the performance requirements, which are addressed in a separate standard.

Electric radiators (room heaters) are an energy-efficient way to heat a home. Electric radiators include a thermodynamic fluid such as oil, which converts into heat energy when used with electricity. Each electric radiator is equipped with a thermostat that regulates the energy required to keep the home at the appropriate temperature.

It is classified into the following two groups:

  1. Group I - Up to and including 1000 W
  2. Group II - Above 1000 W

This standard specifies the safety of electric radiators (room heaters) used in households and for similar purposes, with rated voltages of not more than 250 V for single-phase appliances and 415 V for other appliances.

The following appliances are examples of those that fall under the scope of this standard:

  1. Convector heaters
  2. Fan heaters
  3. Heaters for use in greenhouses
  4. Liquid filled radiators
  5. Panel heaters
  6. Radiant heaters
  7. Tubular heaters

TESTS

The following test shall be carried out for room heaters.

  • Earth continuity test
  • Electric strength test
  • Functional test
  • Protection against access to live parts
  • Provision for Earthing
  • Power input and current
  • Heating
  • Moisture resistance
  • Leakage current and electric strength
  • Transient overvoltage
  • Mechanical strength and so on

The product must also meet the safety requirements of the standard. Labelling and marking shall be done as per the requirements of IS 302 (Part 2/Sec 30):2007. The Standard Mark (ISI Mark) may also be applied on radiators (room heaters). BIS grant certificate to use the standard mark (ISI Mark) for goods under the product certification programme. The certificate can only be given if the product meets the BIS's product specifications. The manufacturer must obtain a BIS license from the Bureau of Indian Standards to use a standard mark (ISI Mark).

Conclusion:

If a product falls under the scope of the BIS Conformity Assessment Scheme, All the manufacturers, importers, and foreign entities must obtain BIS ISI Certification. The Bureau may cancel the License if the product fails to meet certification requirements.
