BIS Certification for Safes IS 550 (Part 1): 2022

Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) certification is important to ensure that safes meet stringent quality and security standards. For safes, it is necessary to obtain BIS certification as per IS 550 (Part 1): 2022. This standard specifies the dimensions, general requirements and performance criteria of safes, ensuring that they provide strong security and functionality.

IS 550 (Part 1): 2022

IS 550 (Part 1): 2022 The standard covers the construction, material, dimensions and performance requirements of safes. Safes are generally specified by their classification code and size/actual size. The body of the safe should be manufactured with multi-bend construction, allowing allowances on all four sides. The construction ensures that the resultant pull force on the door is resisted by an integral or welded part of the body, rather than by a component part that is screwed or riveted.

Key Features and Requirements

Construction: The body should be made in multi-bend construction to provide strong protection. It should ensure relaxation from all sides.

Recesses for sliding bolts: Recesses for sliding bolts may be individual or continuous slots. This ensures the door is securely locked.

Anchoring Arrangement: If required by the purchaser, proper anchoring arrangement should be provided.

Door Specifications: The door shall be constructed of mild steel plates, supported with suitable barriers to meet performance requirements.

Hinges: Hinges should be of the pivot type, designed to allow free movement of the door without any friction or play. Provision for oiling facilities must be included in the hinges

Bolt work: Bolt work must be installed on a secure base, such as a door slab, along the edges of the door, through which bolts at least 5 mm thick are driven and firmly welded to the door plate.

Locks: Safes should be equipped with keyed locks or mechanical combination locks. Every keyed lock must be fitted with an automatic relocking device which is activated when the lock is dislodged by explosives or other means.

Performance Test: Cross hatch test should be conducted to confirm the adhesion of the coating.

BIS Certificate for Safes IS 550 (Part 1): 2022

Obtaining a BIS certificate ensures that the safes meet the stringent requirements set by IS 550 (Part 1): 2022. Certified safes provide strong security, are free from defects and ensure long-lasting performance. By following this standard, manufacturers can increase product reliability and market acceptance.
