BIS CERTIFICATION FOR SODIUM FORMALDEHYDE SULPHOXYLATE
IS 4505:2015

In this competitive scenario, it isn't easy to survive in the market without a standard quality and certified product. BIS license may also be required to sell products in the Indian market.

To get BIS certification and produce a standard quality product, the manufacturer must ensure that their product must follow the specified Indian standard.

Let's take a closer look at IS 4505:2015 for Sodium formaldehyde sulphoxylate.

IS 4505:2015 covers Sodium formaldehyde sulphoxylate. This standard specifies the requirements, sampling, and testing method for sodium formaldehyde sulphoxylate dehydrate, which is commercially known as sodium sulphoxylate formaldehyde.

Sodium formaldehyde sulphoxylate, a sodium salt of the sulphoxylic acid formaldehyde, is a derivative of sodium hydrosulphite and formaldehyde. It is made by reacting sulphur dioxide with zink dust in an aqueous suspension to produce a zinc hydrosulphite solution. In this solution, formaldehyde and more zinc dust are added to form basic zinc formaldehyde sulphoxylate, which is then decomposed with caustic soda to form sodium formaldehyde sulphoxylate and insoluble zinc hydroxide.

The sodium formaldehyde sulphoxylate must be in the form of small white lumps or granules. It must be soluble in water at room temperature, forming a clear solution with a concentration of up to 50%. The material is hygroscopic in nature. When tested in accordance with prescribed methods, the material must meet the standard's requirements.

TESTS

The following test shall be carried out in accordance with the method specified.

  • Description
  • Sodium formaldehyde sulphoxylate dehydrate
  • Sodium formaldehyde bisulphate
  • Sodium sulphite %
  • pH
  • Iron %
  • Lead %
  • Copper %
  • Zinc %

Packing and Marking:

Packing, storage, and marking must be done as per IS 4505: 2015. The material must be packed in airtight black plate containers of 50 kg capacity with a polyethylene liner that are sound, clean, and dry. The container must be stored in a cool, dry place away from acids or acidic environments. Containers must be securely closed and labelled with the information specified in the standard.

The Standard Mark (ISI Mark) shall be marked on each container of Sodium Formaldehyde Sulphoxylate or printed on the label applied to it, provided that the material so marked meets the requirements of the specification. The Manufacturer must obtain a BIS license from the Bureau of Indian Standards to use a standard mark (ISI Mark). The BIS grants a license based on a successful assessment of manufacturing infrastructure, quality control, testing capabilities, and production process.
