BIS CERTIFICATION FOR STAINLESS STEEL WELDING ELECTRODE CORE WIRE
IS 10631:1983

In this competitive scenario, it isn't easy to survive in the market without a standard quality and certified product. BIS license may also be required to sell products in the Indian market.

To get BIS certification and produce a standard quality product, the manufacturer must ensure that their product must follow the specified Indian standard.

Let’s take a closer look at IS 10631:1983 for stainless steel for welding electrode core wire.

IS 10631 classifies Stainless Steel for Core Wire for Electrodes as Billets and Wire Rods of various steel designations based on their chemical composition. This standard specifies the requirements for stainless steel billets and wire rods used to produce welding electrode core wire.

The steel shall be made through the electric melting process. Each ingot/billet must undergo sufficient reduction and discard to ensure the absence of piping, segregation, and other harmful defects. Billets must be free of piping, segregation, and other harmful defects. The wire rods must have a clean finish, depressions, scratches, and scale that would adversely affect the welding characteristics or the operation of the equipment.

A laboratory shall be adequately maintained, in which the various tests are to be performed according to the methods specified in the standard. Material must meet the requirements specified in the standard when tested.

TESTS

Testing shall be done as per the method specified.

  • Chemical composition
  • Freedom from defects
  • Size and Tolerance

Marking

Marking shall be done as per IS10631:1983. Unless otherwise agreed, the material shall be marked with the cast number, name or trade mark of the manufacturer. The product may also be marked with a Standard mark (ISI Mark).

The manufacturer must obtain a BIS license for stainless steel for welding electrode core wire from the Bureau of Indian Standards to use a standard mark (ISI Mark). BIS will grant a license after successfully assessing manufacturing infrastructure, processes, quality control, and testing capabilities during a visit to manufacturing premises.
