BIS CERTIFICATION FOR STEEL FOR HIGH TEMPERATURE BOLTING APPLICATIONS
IS 14331:1995

In this competitive scenario, it isn't easy to survive in the market without a standard quality and certified product. BIS license may also be required to sell products in the Indian market.

To get BIS certification and produce a standard quality product, the manufacturer must ensure that their product must follow the specified Indian standard.

Let's take a closer look at IS 14331:1995 for steel for high temperature bolting applications.

This standard specifies the steel for fasteners for applications at temperatures above 3000 degrees Celsius, up to the maximum service temperature specified in the standard, which is 6500 degrees Celsius.

The manufacturing process used in the production of steel shall be left to the discretion of the manufacturer. A sufficient amount of discard must be made from each ingot to ensure that the bars are free of piping, harmful porosity, undue segregation, and other defects. The reduction from a cast ingot to the final bar size must be at least four times, and the reduction from a continuously cast billet to the final bar size must be at least six times. Surface defects such as scales, grooves, laps, cracks, and surface decarburization must be included in the machining allowance as agreed upon by the manufacturer and the purchaser. The general requirement for material supply shall be as per IS 8910:1978.

TESTS

Tests shall be carried out as per the specified method.

  • Macroetch test
  • Surface conditions
  • Ultrasonic tests
  • Elevated temperature properties

Packing and marking

Packing and marking shall be done as per IS 14331:1995. The ISI mark may also be applied to the material. Manufacturers must obtain a BIS license from the Bureau of Indian Standards to use a standard mark (ISI Mark). The Bureau grants a license based on a successful assessment of manufacturing infrastructure, production process, quality control, and testing capabilities during a visit to its manufacturing premises.
