BIS CERTIFICATION FOR STEEL FOR LAMINATED SPRINGS
IS 3885 PART 2:1992

In this competitive scenario, it isn't easy to survive in the market without a standard quality and certified product. BIS license may also be required to sell products in the Indian market.

To get BIS certification and produce a standard quality product, the manufacturer must ensure that their product must follow the specified Indian standard.

Let's take a closer look at IS 3885 Part 2:1992 for Steel rib and groove for the manufacture of laminated springs for railway rolling stock.

This standard specifies the requirements for hot rolled steel rib and groove sections intended for the production of laminated springs for railway rolling stock.

Steel shall be of the seven grades as specified in the standard. IS 8910:1978 specifies the general requirements for material supply. The steel shall be produced using any steelmaking process other than the Bessemer process. It must be followed by secondary reining or secondary vacuum melting.

The size of the ingot billet or continuous cast billet for any given size of the finished steel product shall be such that a minimum reduction ratio of 16:1 is ensured from the minimum cross-sectional area of the ingot, billet, or continuous cast billet to the maximum cross-sectional area of the product. However, other reduction ratios may be agreed upon subject to mutual agreement between the purchaser and the manufacturer.

The hot-rolled material must be free of harmful defects such as seams, folds, laps, cracks, deep pits, grooves, excessive scaling, and so on, which can cause cracking during hardening or impair serviceability. The surface should be reasonably smooth with no distortion, twists, or kinks.

TESTS

Tests shall be carried out in accordance with the specified standard.

  • Chemical composition
  • Hardness
  • Decarburization
  • Inclusion rating
  • Freedom from defects
  • Dimensions and Rolling Tolerances
  • Cambering Test

Marking

Marking and packing must be done in accordance with Indian standards. Each flat shall be marked with the manufacturer's name or trademark, grade, and the cast number or any other identification mark that allows the steel to be traced back to the cast from which it was made. Standard Mark (ISI Mark) may also be applied to the material.

Manufacturers must obtain a BIS license from the Bureau of Indian Standards to use a standard mark (ISI Mark). The Bureau grants a license based on a successful assessment of manufacturing infrastructure, production process, and quality control and testing capabilities during a visit to its manufacturing premises.
