BIS CERTIFICATION FOR STEEL FOR VOLUTE & HELICAL SPRINGS
IS 3195:1992

In this competitive scenario, it isn't easy to survive in the market without a standard quality and certified product. BIS license may also be required to sell products in the Indian market.

To get BIS certification and produce a standard quality product, the manufacturer must ensure that their product must follow the specified Indian standard.

Let's take a closer look at IS 3195: 1992 for steel for the manufacture of the volute and helical springs for railway rolling stock.

This standard specifies the requirements for flats and rounds of steel intended for use in the manufacture of the volute and helical springs for railway rolling stock. Steel ingots and billets that meet IS 8052:1976 can be used to make flats and rounds that meet this standard.

The steel shall be of the eight grades as specified in the standard. IS 8910:1978 specifies the general requirements for material supply. Steel may be produced using any method of steel making other than the Bessemer process. It must be followed by Secondary refining or vacuum melting. For any given size of finished steel product, the size of ingots, billets, or continuous cast billets shall be such that a minimum reduction ratio of 16:1 from the product's minimum cross-sectional area is ensured.

TESTS

Tests shall be carried out as per the specified method.

  • Chemical composition
  • Hardness
  • Decarburization
  • Inclusion rating
  • Dimension and tolerances

Marking

Marking shall be done as per IS 3195:1992. Each bar shall be marked with the manufacturer's name or trade-mark, grade, and the cast number or identification mark by which steel can be traced back to the cast from which it was made. Standard Mark (ISI Mark) may also be applied to the material.

Manufacturers must obtain a BIS license from the Bureau of Indian Standards to use a standard mark (ISI Mark). The Bureau grants a license based on a successful assessment of manufacturing infrastructure, production process, and quality control and testing capabilities during a visit to its manufacturing premises.
