BIS CERTIFICATION FOR STEEL INGOTS, BILLETS & BLOOMS
IS 8052:2006

In this competitive scenario, it isn't easy to survive in the market without a standard quality and certified product. BIS license may also be required to sell products in the Indian market.

To get BIS certification and produce a standard quality product, the manufacturer must ensure that their product must follow the specified Indian standard.

Let's take a closer look at IS 8052:2006 for steel ingots, billets, and blooms for the production of springs, rivets, and screws for general engineering applications.

This standard specifies the requirements for steel ingots, cast billet ingots, billets, continuous cast blooms for the manufacture of volute, helical, and laminated springs for railway rolling stock, automotive suspension, and other general engineering applications, as well as wood screws, spring washers, hard drawn steel wire for upholstery springs, machine screws, rivet bars for structural/shipbuilding applications, and bright bars. Ingots, billets, and blooms covered by this standard must be used to make bars and flats that meet the requirements of the specified standard.

The general requirements for steel supply must be in accordance with IS 8910. The size of the ingots, billets, or blooms for any given size of the finished steel product must be such that a minimum reduction ratio of 16:1 from the minimum cross-sectional area of the ingots, billets, or blooms to the maximum cross-sectional area of the product is ensured.

Any commercial steel-making process used by the supplier is acceptable. Pipe, lamination, segregation, inclusion, and cracks are prohibited in billets, blooms, and continuously cast billets or blooms.

TESTS

Tests shall be carried out in accordance with the method specified.

  • Chemical composition
  • Freedom from defects
  • Macro examination
  • Dimensions and Tolerances

Marking:

Marking shall be done as per IS 8052:2006. Each ingot, billet, and bloom must be legibly stamped or painted with the cast number, grade, and identity of the source of manufacture. The standard mark (ISI Mark) may also be applied to the material. Manufacturers must obtain a BIS license from the Bureau of Indian Standards to use a standard mark (ISI Mark). The Bureau grants a license based on a successful assessment of manufacturing infrastructure, production process, and quality control and testing capabilities during a visit to its manufacturing premises.
