BIS CERTIFICATION FOR STEEL INGOTS, BLOOMS, & BILLETS
IS 8952:1995

In this competitive scenario, it isn't easy to survive in the market without a standard quality and certified product. BIS license may also be required to sell products in the Indian market.

To get BIS certification and produce a standard quality product, the manufacturer must ensure that their product must follow the specified Indian standard.

Let's take a closer look at IS 8952:1995 for Steel ingots, blooms, and billets for the production of mild steel wire rods for general engineering purposes.

This standard specifies the requirements for steel ingots, blooms, and billets used in the manufacture of mild steel wire rods. Steel for mild steel wire rods must be of the grade as specified in the standard.

Stell may be produced using any steel-making process at the manufacturer's discretion. Steel must be killed or semi-killed. Each ingot must undergo sufficient reduction and discard to ensure that it is free of pipe, segregation, and other harmful defects. Blooms, billets, and continuously cast billets must be free of potentially harmful defects such as pipe, laminations, segregation inclusions, and cracks. The general requirements for steel supply shall be in accordance with IS 8910:1978.

TESTS

Tests shall be carried out in accordance with the method specified.

  • Chemical Composition
  • Freedom from defects
  • Macro examination
  • Dimension and tolerances

Marking:

Marking shall be done as per IS 8952:1995. Each ingot, bloom, and billet must be stamped or painted with the grade, cast number, and the manufacturer's name or trade mark. The standard mark (ISI Mark) may also be marked on the material. Manufacturers must obtain a BIS license from the Bureau of Indian Standards to use a standard mark (ISI Mark).
