BIS CERTIFICATION FOR STRUCTURAL STEEL
IS 15911:2010

In this competitive scenario, it isn't easy to survive in the market without a standard quality and certified product. BIS license may also be required to sell products in the Indian market.

To get BIS certification and produce a standard quality product, the manufacturer must ensure that their product must follow the specified Indian standard.

Let’s take a closer look at IS 15911:2010 for Structural Steel.

This standard's structural steel is intended for general purposes such as door and window frames, window bars, grills, steel gates, hand railing, building hardware, fencing post, and tie bars, and shall not be applicable for dynamic loading other than wind loads, such as platform roofs, footover bridges, office buildings, and so on.

The steel shall be classified into three grades: E165, E170, and E215.

The processes used in steel production and further hot rolling into steel strips, sections, flats, bars, etc., are left to the manufacturer’s discretion. Steel must be killed or semi-killed, and all finished steel must be well and thoroughly rolled. The chemical composition must be in accordance with applicable standards. The general requirements for structural steel supply must conform to IS 8910.

TESTS

Tests shall be carried out in accordance with the method specified.

  • Tensile test
  • Bend test

Marking:

With the exception of round, square, and hexagonal bars and flats, each product must have a tag or be marked with the manufacturer's name or trade mark. The standard mark (ISI Mark) may also be applied to the material.

The Manufacturer must obtain a BIS license from the Bureau of Indian Standards to use a standard mark (ISI Mark). The Bureau grants a license based on a successful assessment of manufacturing infrastructure, production process, and quality control and testing capabilities during a visit to its manufacturing premises.
