BIS CERTIFICATION FOR STYRENE BUTADIENE RUBBER LATEX
IS 11356:2020

IS 11356: 2020 covers styrene-butadiene rubber latex. The Bureau of Indian Standards adopted this Indian Standard (First Revision) after the Petroleum, Coal, and Related Products Division Council approved the draft finalized by the Rubber and Rubber Products Sectional Committee. Styrene-butadiene latex is used in tyre cord dipping, compounding adhesives for the footwear and paper industries, carpet backings, upholstery, and linings for proofed goods such as firefighting hoses, etc.

This standard specifies the requirements and sampling and testing methods for styrene-butadiene rubber latex. This standard applies to non-staining hot polymerized styrene butadiene type copolymer latex emulsified with rosin acid soap emulsifier. The material must meet the requirements specified in this standard. The tests specified in the standard must be carried out according to the specifications in a properly equipped and staffed laboratory.

TESTS

The following test shall be carried out in accordance with the method specified.

• Total solids content
• Residual styrene
• pH
• Mooney viscosity
• Bound styrene
• Surface tension
• Relative density
• Average particle size
• Coagulum content
• Mechanical stability

Packing and marking shall be done in accordance with IS 11356:2020. The latex shall be packed in epoxy coated mild steel drums or in other containers agreed upon by the purchaser and the supplier. The containers must be labelled with the manufacturer's name or a trade-mark, the net and gross mass in kg, and the month and year of packing.

Conforming to the requirements of this standard, the product may be certified under the provisions of the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 2016 and the Rules and Regulations framed thereunder, and the product(s) may be marked with the Standard Mark (ISI Mark). The Manufacturer must obtain a BIS license from the Bureau of Indian Standards to use a standard mark (ISI Mark). The BIS grants a license based on a successful assessment of manufacturing infrastructure, quality control and testing capabilities, and production process.

Conclusion:

If a product falls under the scope of the BIS Conformity Assessment Scheme, All the manufacturers, importers, and foreign entities must obtain BIS ISI Certification. The Bureau may cancel the License if the product fails to meet certification requirements.
