BIS CERTIFICATION FOR STYRENE VINYL BENZENE
IS 4105:2020

In this competitive scenario, it isn't easy to survive in the market without a standard quality and certified product. BIS license may also be required to sell products in the Indian market.

The Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers has issued styrene (vinyl benzene) (Quality Control Orders), 2002. As per this order, the Bureau of Indian Standards has made it mandatory to obtain BIS certification for styrene (vinyl benzene). Styrene (vinyl benzene) shall conform to IS 4105: 2020 and shall bear the Standard Mark (ISI Mark) under a license from the Bureau of Indian Standards as per Scheme-I of Schedule-II of the Bureau of Indian Standards (Conformity Assessment) Regulations 2018.

To obtain a BIS certificate for styrene (vinyl benzene), the manufacturer must ensure that styrene (vinyl benzene) conforms to applicable Indian standards. IS 4105:2020 is the Indian standard for styrene (vinyl benzene).

Let's take a closer look at IS 4150:2020 for styrene (vinyl benzene).

This standard specifies the requirements and the methods of sampling and testing for styrene (vinyl benzene). At 27°C, the material shall be a clear liquid free of sediment, suspended matter, and undissolved water. The material shall also meet the requirements of the standard.

There will be two grades of material:

  • Grade 1: Used in the plastics industry
  • Grade 2: Used in the Rubber industry

Tests

Tests shall be carried out in accordance with the method specified in the standard.

  • Determination of relative density
  • Determination of refractive index
  • Determination of freezing point
  • Determination of aldehyde and polymer content
  • Determination of peroxides, chloride
  • Determination of solubility of polymers and other tests

Packing and marking:

Packing and marking shall be carried out as per IS 4105:2020. All containers must be dry, clean, free of styrene-soluble substances, and leakproof. The containers must be securely closed, kept away from light and heat, and kept in a cool place.

Each container shall bear the name and grade of the material, name of the manufacturer and trade mark, batch number, date of manufacture, net and gross mass, and inhibitor content. The container may also be marked with the standard mark (ISI Mark).

The manufacturer must obtain a BIS licence for styrene (vinyl benzene) from the Bureau of Indian Standards to use a standard mark (ISI Mark). Bureau of Indian standards will grant a BIS license after successfully assessing manufacturing infrastructure, processes, quality control, and testing capabilities during a visit to manufacturing premises.
