IS 5478:1969 covers the thermostat metal sheet and strip. This standard specifies the general requirements for thermostat metal in sheet and strip form.

Thermostat metal is a composite material, usually in the form of a sheet or strip, made up of two or more materials of any appropriate nature, metallic, or otherwise, that tend to change curvature when the temperature is changed due to the differing coefficients of linear expansion of the components.

By including material constants such as chemical composition and physical properties, this standard can also be used as a guide in preparing detailed specifications for various specified types of thermostat metals.

The physical properties of a specific type of thermostat metal, such as flexibility, hardness, and electrical resistivity, must conform to the specifications established by the supplier and must be as agreed upon between the purchaser and the supplier.

The bond between the component materials must be strong and complete throughout the entire sheet or strip. The material's surface must be free of cracks, seams, laps, scratches, blisters, rust, and other defects that are detrimental to the material's performance.

The supplier must provide a certificate stating that the material supplied meets the material specification requirements.
