BIS CERTIFICATION FOR TOLUENE

Let's take a closer look at IS 537: 2011 for toluene.

IS 537:2011 covers toluene. The Bureau of Indian Standards adopted this Indian Standard after the draft was finalized by Petroleum, Lubricants, and Related Products Sectional Committee and was approved by the Petroleum, Coal, and Related Products Division Council.

This standard specifies the requirements and the sampling and testing techniques for toluene. Toluene is a raw material used in the production of alkylated, nitrated, and halogenated organic intermediates for petrochemical dyestuffs and fine chemicals industries. It is also employed as a solvent in formulating paints, coatings, adhesives, and inks. The material must meet the specifications specified in the standard.

The following tests shall be carried out according to the methodology specified.

  • Relative Density test
  • Sulphur Content test
  • Distillation Range test
  • Non-Aromatic Hydrocarbons test
  • Hydrogen Sulphide And Sulphurdioxide test

Packing and Marking:

Packing and marking shall be done in accordance with IS 537:2011. The material shall be packed in accordance with the agreement reached between the purchaser and the supplier. All containers in which the material is packed must be dry, clean, free of toluene-soluble compounds, and leakproof. The containers must be properly closed, light-protected, and kept in a cool environment.

Each container shall be marked with the information as specified in standard. The Conforming to the requirements of this standard, the product(s) may be certified under the scheme of the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 2016 and the Rules and Regulations formulated thereunder, and the product(s) may be marked with the Standard Mark (ISI Mark). The Manufacturer must obtain a BIS license from the Bureau of Indian Standards to use a standard mark (ISI Mark). The BIS grants a license based on a successful assessment of manufacturing infrastructure, quality control, testing capabilities, and production process.
