BIS CERTIFICATION FOR TOOL STEEL FORGINGS
IS 13387:1992

In this competitive scenario, it isn't easy to survive in the market without a standard quality and certified product. BIS license may also be required to sell products in the Indian market.

To get BIS certification and produce a standard quality product, the manufacturer must ensure that their product must follow the specified Indian standard.

Let's take a closer look at IS 13387:1992 for tool steel forgings.

IS 13387:1992 covers tool steel forgings for metal forming. This standard specifies the requirements for tool steel forgings used in metal forming operations.

According to IS 13387:1992, Tool Steel Forgings for Metal Forming classifies into Cold Forming and Hot Forming Designations.

Forgings must be made from steel produced by an electric or other approved process, and the steel must be completely killed. Steel must be clean, and forgings must have minimal directional properties due to non-metallic inclusions. Each ingot must be reduced sufficiently by hot working and discard to ensure complete soundness, an adequately homogeneous structure, and the desired carbide distribution.

Hot forgings between flat dies shall be used to produce long bars of rectangular, square hexagon sections. Hot forging shall be performed in a hammer or press with sufficient capacity to adequately work the raw material's core during forging.

IS 1387:1967 specifies the general requirements for the supply of tool steel forgings. The forgings must be supplied in fully annealed and descaled conditions. The steel must be free from ferritic decarburization, and forgings shall be from Internal and surface flaws. Tool steel forgings must conform to the requirements of the standard.

TESTS

Tests shall be done in accordance with the method prescribed.

  • Decarburization
  • Tolerances
  • Hardness test
  • Chemical composition
  • Additional tests

Marking:

Each forging must be marked with the information as specified in the standard. The standard mark (ISI Mark) may also be applied to the material. The Manufacturer must obtain a BIS license from Bureau to use a standard mark (ISI Mark). The Bureau grants a license based on a successful assessment of manufacturing infrastructure, production process, and quality control and testing capabilities during a visit to its manufacturing premises.
