BIS CERTIFICATION FOR TUNGSTEN FILAMENT LAMPS
IS 418:2004

In this competitive scenario, it isn't easy to survive in the market without a standard quality and certified product. BIS license may also be required to sell products in the Indian market.

To get BIS certification and produce a standard quality product, the manufacturer must ensure that their product must follow the specified Indian standard.
Let's take a closer look at IS 418:2004 for Tungsten filament lamps.

Tungsten filament lamps produce light by heating the filament to extremely high temperatures. It works on the incandescence principle. The term 'incandescent' refers to light produced by heat.

This standard applies to tungsten filament incandescent lamps for general lighting service (GLS) that meet the safety requirements in Doc ET 23 (5291) and have the following characteristics:

  • Rated wattage of 15 W, 25 W, 40 W, 60 W,100 W, 150 W, and 200 W
  • Rated voltage 110 V, 230 V, 240 V, and 250 V, including marked voltage range not exceeding ± 2.5% of the mean voltage
  • Bulbs of the A, K, M, or PS shapes
  • Bulbs with clear frosted or equivalently coated finishes, or white finishes.
  • Caps B22d or E27
  • Lamp shell diameters shall range from 54 to 62 mm for ratings up to 100 W.

This standard specifies the performance requirements for lamps and test methodologies and procedures for ensuring compliance requirements. This procedure can be used to obtain certification. The lamps claiming compliance with this standard must meet the requirements of Doc ET 23 (5291).

Lamps must be designed in such a way that their performance is reliable in normal and accepted use. In general, this can be accomplished by meeting the requirements of the standard. Lamps must be tested according to the test procedure. Lamps must meet the dimensional requirements specified on the relevant lamp datasheet. Lamps with E27 caps must meet the gauge for testing contact-making specified in datasheet 7006-50. Individual lamp lumen maintenance at 75% of rated life shall not be less than the minimum value specified on the relevant lamp datasheet.

Tests

The following test shall be carried out for tungsten filament incandescent lamps.

  • Marking
  • Lamp Dimensions
  • Wattage
  • Luminous Flux Initial
  • Accidentally live parts
  • Protection against accidental contact in screw lamp holders
  • Insulation resistance
  • Interchangeability

The lamp shall be marked with information as specified in the standard. ISI certification mark may also be marked on the lamps. All tungsten filament general service electric bulbs (up to 100 W) are subject to the ISI Certification Scheme, under IS 418:2004. Without the ISI Mark, this product cannot be exported/imported or marketed in the Indian consumer market. Under the product certification programme, BIS grants certificates to use the standard mark (ISI Mark) for objects. After verification that the product meets the BIS's product requirements, the certificate will be granted by BIS. The Manufacturer must obtain a BIS license from the Bureau of Indian Standards to use a standard mark (ISI Mark).

Conclusion:

If a product falls under the scope of the BIS Conformity Assessment Scheme, All the manufacturers, importers, and foreign entities must obtain BIS ISI Certification. The Bureau may cancel the License if the product fails to meet certification requirements.
