BIS CERTIFICATION FOR UPVC PIPES FOR AGRICULTURAL PUMP SETS
IS 12231:1987

In this competitive scenario, it isn't easy to survive in the market without a standard quality and certified product. BIS license may also be required to sell products in the Indian market.

To get BIS certification and produce a standard quality product, the manufacturer must ensure that their product must follow the specified Indian standard.

Let's take a closer look at IS 12231-1987 for Unplasticized PVC pipes for use in suction and delivery lines of agricultural pump sets, IS : 12231- 1987

IS 12231-1987 covers unplasticized PVC pipes used in the suction and delivery lines of agriculture pump sets. The Bureau of Indian Standards adopted this Indian Standard on November 25, 1987, after the Civil Engineering Division Council approved the draft finalized by the Sanitary Appliances and Water Fittings Sectional Committee.

This specification specifies the requirements for plain end pipes made of unplasticized polyvinyl chloride for suction and delivery lines of agricultural pump sets that are exposed to the atmosphere and sunlight.

The pipe shall be classified by the pressure ratings (working pressure) at 27°C as follows:

Type of Pipe Working pressure
1 W 0.4 MPa
2 W 0.6 MPa

The pipe shall be made primarily of polyvinyl chloride, to which only those additives may be added that are necessary to facilitate the manufacture of sound pipe with a good surface finish, mechanical strength, and capacity under use conditions.

The pipe shall be subjected to the following test:

  1. Type test
  2. Acceptance test
  3. Reversion Test
  4. Test for opacity
  5. Test for resistance to sulphuric acid
  6. Friction test
  7. Vacuum test
  8. Hydrostatic pressure test
  9. Impact Strength test

All pipes must be clearly and indelibly marked with the Manufacturer's name or trademark, outside diameter, class of pipe and pressure rating, and batch number as per specification.

The Standard Mark (ISI Mark) may also be applied to each pipe. The Manufacturer must obtain a BIS license from the Bureau of Indian Standards to use a standard mark (ISI Mark). The Bureau grants a license based on a successful assessment of manufacturing infrastructure, production process, and quality control and testing capabilities during a visit to its manufacturing premises.
