BIS CERTIFICATION FOR WHEELS OR RIMS FOR TRUCKS & BUSES

In this competitive scenario, it isn't easy to survive in the market without a standard quality and certified product. BIS license may also be required to sell products in the Indian market.

Performance Requirements and Methods of Tests for Wheels or Rims for Trucks and Buses are covered under IS 9438. This standard specifies laboratory test methods and performance requirements for assessing certain essential strength characteristics of disc wheels designed for highway use on trucks, buses, trailers, and multipurpose passenger vehicles. Failure criteria have also been specified for the tests covered by this standard.

Wheels/Rims for Trucks and Buses are classified as follows according to IS 9438:2018:

  1. Based on Material of Wheel/ Rim
    • Ferrous
    • Aluminium
  2. Based on Category of Wheel Rim
    • Disc Wheel
    • Wheel with demountable Rim

Wheels/Rims with the highest load rating for each Material and Wheel Rim Category will be tested to cover the whole variety of Wheels/Rims for that Material. Only fully processed new wheels/rims that represent the wheels/rims intended for the vehicle shall be used for the tests, and a single wheel/rim shall not be used for more than one test.

Tests

Following tests are covered:

  1. Disc wheel dynamic cornering fatigue test: The test shall be performed using one of the methods specified in the standard.
    • Cornering fatigue test (90” loading method)
    • Cornering fatigue test (40” loading method)
    • Cornering fatigue test (two-axis load method)
  2. Disc wheel and demountable rim endurance test under dynamic radial load.

A laboratory shall be adequately maintained, in which the various tests shall be carried out according to the methods specified in the standard.

Wheels and rims must be labelled with the manufacturer's name or trademark, as well as the size designation. All production that complies with the Indian Standard and is covered by the license should bear the Standard Mark (ISI Mark). The Manufacturer must obtain a BIS license from the Bureau of Indian Standards to use a standard mark (ISI Mark). The BIS grants a license based on a successful assessment of manufacturing infrastructure, quality control and testing capabilities, and production process.

Conclusion:

If a product falls under the scope of the BIS Conformity Assessment Scheme, All the manufacturers, importers, and foreign entities must obtain BIS ISI Certification. The Bureau may cancel the License if the product fails to meet certification requirements.
