BIS CERTIFICATION FOR ACETIC ACID
IS 695:2020

In this competitive scenario, it isn't easy to survive in the market without a standard quality and certified product. BIS license may also be required to sell products in the Indian market.

To get BIS certification and produce a standard quality product, the manufacturer must ensure that their product must follow the specified Indian standard.

Let's take a closer look at IS 695:2020 for Acetic Acid.

IS 695:2020 covers Acetic Acid. This standard specifies the requirements and sampling and testing methods for acetic acid.

Acetic acid is used in the production of cellulose acetate and vinyl acetate and the textile industry for dyeing. Rubber latex is also used in the manufacture of rubber balloons, sanitary goods, and surgical gloves. Acetic acid is used to make a variety of chemical compounds such as lead, sodium, and calcium acetates. Acetic acid is also used to make some popular thinner used in the paint industry, such as butyl and ethyl acetates. It is used in pickles in a dilute form known as white-wine vinegar.

The material shall be classified into three grades, namely:

  1. Technical
  2. Pure, and
  3. Analytical Reagent (AR)

At all temperatures above the crystallizing point, the material must be a clear liquid free of suspended matter and has a characteristic pungent odour. The colour of pure and analytical reagent grades of the material shall not be more than 20 Hazen units, while the material in the technical grade shall be colourless or may have a pale yellow/straw colour. The material must also meet the requirements of this standard.

TESTS

The following test shall be done in accordance with the method prescribed in this standard.

  • Description
  • Color
  • Relative density
  • Determination of crystallizing point
  • Determination of Solubility in water
  • Determination of Acetic acid content
  • Residue on evaporation
  • Determination of Chlorides
  • Determination of Iron
  • Determination of Sulphates
  • Determination of Water content
  • Arsenic Content

Packing and Marking shall be done in accordance with IS 695:2020. Each container must be securely closed and clearly labelled with the information as specified in this standard. The Standard Mark (ISI Mark) shall be marked on the product's container, provided that the material so marked meets the requirements of the specification.
