IS 170:2020 covers Acetone. This standard specifies the requirements, sampling methods, and testing procedures for acetone intended for industrial use.

Acetone is a widely used commercial solvent and raw material in the chemical, explosives, and lacquer industries. It is frequently used as a solvent for cellulose acetate, cellulose ether, nitrocellulose, celluloid, chlorinated rubber, various resins, fats, and oils, and as acetylene absorbent. It is increasingly being used in the synthesis of a variety of chemicals, including diacetone alcohol, methyl isobutyl ketone, phorone, isophorone, methyl methocrylate, and various resins, pharmaceuticals, and perfumes.

The material must be clear and free from suspended matter. It must be primarily composed of two propanones or dimethylketones. The material must also meet the requirements of the standard.

TESTS

The following test shall be done in accordance with method specified in this standard.

  • Purity of acetone
  • Test for Acidity
  • Relative density
  • Distillation Range
  • Test for water Content
  • Residue on Evaporation
  • Permanganate Test
  • Test for Alcoholic Impurities
  • Test for benzene and some other material content

Packing and Marking

Packing and Marking shall be done in accordance with IS 170:2020. Materials must be delivered in sound and clean containers in accordance with the labeling and delivery instructions given by the purchaser. Each container shall be clearly and indelibly marked with the information as specified in the standard.

The Standard Mark (ISI Mark) shall be marked on the product's container provided that the material so marked meets all requirements of the specification. To use a standard mark (ISI Mark), the manufacturer must obtain a BIS licence from the Bureau of Indian Standards. The BIS issues a licence based on a successful evaluation of the manufacturing infrastructure, quality control, testing capabilities, and manufacturing process.

Conclusion:
