BIS CERTIFICATION FOR ACRYLONITRILE
IS 12540:1988

In this competitive scenario, it isn't easy to survive in the market without a standard quality and certified product. BIS license may also be required to sell products in the Indian market.

To get BIS certification and produce a standard quality product, the manufacturer must ensure that their product must follow the specified Indian standard.

Let's take a closer look at IS 12540:1988 for Acrylonitrile.

This standard specifies the requirements, sampling methods, and tests for acrylonitrile.

The material must be a clear, colourless liquid with no suspended matter. The colour should be observed in transmitted light. When tested, the material must also meet the requirements of the standard. A laboratory in which the various tests are to be performed according to the methods specified in the standard must be adequately maintained.

Acrylonitrile is a highly toxic colourless mobile liquid used to make synthetic rubber, plastics, synthetic fibres, and other products. Acrylonitrile is also widely used in organic synthesis and grain fumigants.

It is not necessary to determine the acetonitrile content of acrylonitrile derived from hydrocyanic acid and acetylene. Because acrylonitrile is flammable, all the necessary precautions must be taken at all times to avoid an accident caused by fire or explosion. It should be stored in a cool, dry place. Open flames and smoking are not permitted in areas where it is stored or handled. Storage containers must be vented to ensure a safe environment.

TESTS

Tests shall be carried out as per the specified method.

  • Determination of Distillation Range
  • Determination of water content
  • Determination of specific gravity
  • Determination of Refractive index
  • Determination of hydrocyanic acid content

Packing and Marking:

The material must be packed in mild steel cans and drums, and it will be transported using tank cars and tank trucks. Each container must be securely closed and bear the name of the material, the net mass of the material, the name and trademark of the manufacturer, lot or batch number, and any other information specified. The container may also bear the standard mark (ISI Mark).

The Bureau of Indian Standards grants BIS certificates to use the standard mark (ISI Mark) under the product certification scheme after confirming that the product meets the requirements of Indian standards. The manufacturer must obtain a BIS license for Acrylonitrile from the Bureau of Indian Standards to use a standard mark (ISI Mark).

Conclusion:

If a product falls under the scope of the BIS Conformity Assessment Scheme, All the manufacturers, importers, and foreign entities must obtain BIS ISI Certification. The Bureau may cancel the License if the product fails to meet certification requirements.
