BIS CERTIFICATION FOR DOMESTIC WATER HEATERS
IS 15558:2005

In this competitive scenario, it isn't easy to survive in the market without a standard quality and certified product. BIS license may also be required to sell products in the Indian market.

To get BIS certification and produce a standard quality product, the manufacturer must ensure that their product must follow the specified Indian standard.

Let's take a closer look at IS 15558: 2005 for instantaneous domestic water heaters.

IS 15558: 2005 covers instantaneous domestic water heaters for use with LPG. This standard specifies the requirements for the instantaneous and continuous production of hot water for household use with liquefied petroleum gases (LPG) at a working pressure of 2.942 kN/m2 (30 gf/cm2). It is a water-inlet-controlled appliance. It defines the main constructional and performance characteristics of an instantaneous domestic water heater, and it also specifies the relevant test techniques for assessing test characteristics. This standard does not include water-boiling appliances.

An instantaneous gas water heater is a device in which the heating of water is directly dependent on the draw off. The manufacturer must ensure that the product meets the standard's general, construction, and performance requirements. The following are some of the constructional and general requirements.

All parts that come in contact with water must be made of materials that do not pollute the water. All parts must be made and built in such a way that the performance characteristics of an appliance do not change significantly over time. Brazed or welded joints are required on all elements of water heaters that are exposed to direct heat. Wherever applicable, the gas (heat) input to the pilot alone must not exceed 8 1/h at a gas inlet pressure of 30 gf/cm2 and a temperature of 25°C to 30°C.

The appliance must be equipped with a safety feature that switches off the gas supply if water does not flow or stops flowing while in use. The materials used in the water heater building must be resistant to regular wear and deterioration. The burner's primary body, which contains the mixer head, mixing tube, and burner head, must be of strong and durable construction. Metals with melting points lower than 510°C are not permitted. When tested according to the method defined in IS 2305, copper and copper alloy parts must pass the mercurous nitrate test (season cracking test).

tests

The following test shall be carried out for an instantaneous domestic water heater.

  • Mercurous Nitrate Test
  • Immersion Test
  • Water Soundness
  • Gas Soundness
  • Combustion Test
  • Ignition and Flame Travel test
  • FlashBack
  • Hot water output Test

Each appliance must be legibly and permanently marked with information as specified in the standard. The appliances must be packed such that there is no damage during transit. Conforming to the requirements of IS 15558:2005, the product may be certified under the terms of the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 2016 and the Rules and Regulations formulated thereunder, and the product may be marked with the Standard Mark (ISI Mark). The Manufacturer must obtain a BIS license from the Bureau of Indian Standards to use a standard mark (ISI Mark). The BIS grants a license based on a successful assessment of manufacturing infrastructure, quality control, testing capabilities, and production process.
