BIS CERTIFICATION FOR ELECTRIC IRON
IS 302 (PART 2/SEC 3):2007

In this competitive scenario, it isn't easy to survive in the market without a standard quality and certified product. BIS license may also be required to sell products in the Indian market.

To get BIS certification and produce a standard quality product, the manufacturer must ensure that their product must follow the specified Indian standard.

Let's take a closer look at IS 302 (Part 2/Sec 3):2007 for electric iron.

IS 302 (Part 2/Sec 3) covers electric iron. The Bureau of Indian Standards adopted this Indian Standard (Part 2/Sec 3) (First Revision) after the Electrotechnical Division Council approved the draft finalized by the Electrical Appliances Sectional Committee. This standard specifies the electric iron's safety requirements.

This standard addresses the safety requirements of electric dry irons and steam irons for domestic and similar purposes, including those with a separate water reservoir or boiler with a capacity of not more than 5 litres and rated voltages of not more than 250 V.

This standard applies to appliances that are not intended for normal household use but may still pose a risk to the public, such as those used by laymen in shops, light industries, and on farms.

IS 302-2-3:2007 covers the safety of the following major types of electric irons:

  • Dry Iron - Cordless
  • Dry Iron - With Cord
  • Vented Steam Iron - Cordless
  • Vented Steam Iron - With Cord
  • Pressurized Steam Iron - Cordless
  • Pressurized Steam Iron - With Cord
  • Instantaneous Steam Iron - Cordless
  • Instantaneous Steam Iron - With Cord

TESTS

The following test will be carried out for electric iron.

  1. Earth Continuity test
  2. Electric strength test
  3. Functional test
  4. Protection against access to live parts
  5. Power input and current
  6. Leakage current and electric strength at operating temperature
  7. Provision for earthing and so on

The following grouping shall be considered for GoL/CSoL:

  1. Group I - up to and including 1000 W
  2. Group II above 1000 W

Labelling and marking shall be done as per the requirements of IS 302 (Part 2/Sec 3):2007. The product must also meet the requirements of the standard, and the Standard Mark (ISI Mark) may also be applied to the product. The manufacturer must obtain a BIS license from the Bureau of Indian Standards to use a standard mark (ISI Mark). The Bureau grants a license based on a successful assessment of a manufacturer's manufacturing infrastructure, production process, and quality control and testing capabilities during a visit to its manufacturing premises.

Conclusion:

If a product falls under the scope of the BIS Conformity Assessment Scheme, All the manufacturers, importers, and foreign entities must obtain BIS ISI Certification. The Bureau may cancel the License if the product fails to meet certification requirements.
