BIS CERTIFICATION FOR ETHYLENE GLYCOL
IS 5295:2021

In this competitive scenario, it isn't easy to survive in the market without a standard quality and certified product. BIS license may also be required to sell products in the Indian market.

To get BIS certification and produce a standard quality product, the manufacturer must ensure that their product must follow the specified Indian standard.

Let's take a closer look at IS 5295:2021 for Ethylene Glycol.

IS 5295:2021 covers Ethylene Glycol. This standard specifies the requirements and the sampling and testing methods for ethylene glycol, which is used in antifreeze formulations, explosives, organic intermediates, and polyester fibres and filaments. Ethylene glycol is also known as 1, 2 ethanediol, and, more colloquially, monoethylene glycol.

The material will be available in two grades.

  • General grade
  • Fibre grade

The material should be colorless and free from suspended solids, and it must be miscible with water at any ratio at 20° C. The material must also meet the requirements specified in the standard when tested according to the specified method. The material must be well protected from atmospheric humidity because it absorbs twice its mass of water vapor from the atmosphere.

TESTS

The following test shall be carried out in accordance with the method prescribed.

  1. Color, Hazen units
  2. Relative Density at 27℃
  3. Distillation Range
  4. Moisture Content
  5. Acidity
  6. Ash Percent
  7. Diethylene Glycol
  8. Chlorides Content
  9. Iron Content

Packing and Marking:

Packing and Marking shall be done in accordance with IS 5295:2021. The material should be packed in a suitable, well-sealed container, preferably with a removable closure. Each container must be labelled with the information as specified in the standard.

The Standard Mark (ISI Mark) shall be marked on the product's container provided that the material so marked meets all specification requirements. The Manufacturer must obtain a BIS license from the Bureau of Indian Standards to use a standard mark (ISI Mark). The BIS grants a license based on a successful assessment of manufacturing infrastructure, quality control, testing capabilities, and production process.
