To get BIS certification and produce a standard quality product, the manufacturer must ensure that their product must follow the specified Indian standard.

Let's take a closer look at IS 7328:2020 for polyethylene material for moulding and extrusion.

Polyethylene material for moulding and extrusion is covered under IS 7328:2020. This standard specifies the requirements, sampling methods, and tests for materials and compounds made of low-density polyethylene (LDPE), linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE), and high density polyethylene (HDPE). It applies to materials that are ready for use in the form of granules, pellets, or powder. This standard is intended to identify and characterize low density polyethylene, linear low density polyethylene, and high density polyethylene materials and compounds based on basic polymer parameters and recommended end uses.

Though this standard indicates the major end use, it does not impose any restrictions, nor does it guarantee the suitability of a specific grade under specific processing and end use conditions. This standard applies to all polyethylene homopolymers and ethylene copolymers with a content of other 1-olefinic monomers of less than 50% (mass fraction) and content of non-olefinic monomers with functional groups of up to 3%. (mass fraction). This standard is not applicable to master batches or PE-UHMW (Ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene).

Designation code of LDPE/LLDPE/HDPE and compounds shall be done based on four, and five data blocks, respectively, where data block 1 is the Indian Standard, data block 2 is for the material, and data block 3 is for Intended application or method of processing, performance additives, and supplementary information are to be declared by the manufacturer and are for the buyer's information. Data Block 4 contains designatory properties like MFI and density. Each designation code that the manufacturer intends to cover in the scope of the licence must be declared in their application for consideration of the grant of licence and change in scope of licence.

The material must be homogeneous and free of foreign matter. Density and melt flow rate or melt flow index is the minimum properties that must be measured for low density polyethylene, linear low density polyethylene, high density polyethylene, and compounds.


The following test shall be carried out in accordance with the method specified in the standard.

  1. Type Tests (Product Approval)
    • Density
    • Melt flow rate or Melt flow index
  2. Acceptance Tests (Product Identification)

The Standard Mark (ISI Mark) shall be marked on each bag and unit package, provided that the material so marked meets the specifications' requirements. The material must be packed in a suitable manner as agreed upon by the purchaser and supplier. The information specified in this standard must be marked on each bag or unit package. The Manufacturer must obtain a BIS license from the Bureau of Indian Standards to use a standard mark (ISI Mark). The BIS grants a license based on a successful assessment of manufacturing infrastructure, quality control and testing capabilities, and production process.
